Fertilize your plants with kitchen waste

Food waste is a global problem. In united states of America million tonns of food is wasted and ends in the landfill. This food waste in the landfills release methane gas into the environment. There are two types of food waste, One that is spoiled , expired or rotten ones which is called as Food waste and the Unavoidable food waste from food preparation like egg shells, banana peels, coffee grounds, which is called Food Scraps. Many consider these scraps as food waste.
We can use these food scraps in two ways to grow our garden.
  • By decomposing the scraps into soil
  • Scraps into plant fertilizer.
Many of us may not have access to compost foods, but everyone can use these food scraps into plant/garden fertilizer and help us grow healthy plants and flowers. Here are some scraps which can be used in the gardening
  • EGG SHELLS:  Every household use eggs on a regular basis as they are good source of protein. Even the shells are good source of calcium and great for the plants. These shells help grow plant big and strong. Dry the shells sun/shade, crush them into small pieces and scatter them around your plant.
These have other benefits too: they are excellent pest repellents. Keeping  slugs and snails at bay. These shells can be used as seed starters as well.
  • BANANA PEELS:  Rich in potassium. These are best alternative to the chemical fertilizer. Simply chop the whole peels and add into the soil and helps plant to flower and fruit. Instead of adding peels as you are afraid of attracting insects and pests we can blend the peels with water and add these liquid fertilizer to plants as well.
  • COFFEE GROUNDS: If you are a coffee person like me and wanna start the day with coffee this one is for you. Coffee grounds are  great source of nitrogen and minerals. These are good for the plants. Instead of discarding them, Dry the used coffee powder and add this powder to the plants.
