Image
As we are getting closer to the Christmas, It means its gifting time. People spend a lot of money in buying gifts, which do not fill the purpose or which doesn't spark joy. Every year tons of gifts end up in the land fill. Its mainly because people doesn't really need the item you actually gifted. Here i come up with very simple, sustainable Eco friendly gift ideas i.e plants, yes there are two such plants that are worth gifting especially during the Christmas time. Plants add colour, Life and cheer to your home on the chilliest of days. Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera): These are small genes of cacti. They mainly bloom during this time hence, their name. These plants have beautiful flowers, and available in various colors. With proper care and attention this plant will continue to grow for many years (perennial plants).  Christmas cactus is truly a gift that is living and keeps on giving.  This can be considered as a best gift cause this cactus is very budget f...

Protein rich Vegan foods

Image
VEGAN Foods rich in protein Proteins are one of the macro nutrient. Our body uses protein from food to build and repair tissues as well as make enzymes and hormones. Unlike carbohydrates and fats our body cannot store proteins, hence we need to take protein everyday. Lack of sufficient protein in the diet causes stunting, muscle wasting, weakens immune system. Proteins are made up of amino acids, our body requires 20 amino acids to grow and function normally. Though there are 20 amino acids only 9 amino acids are classified as essential amino acids because they cannot be synthesized by our body. A healthy person requires 0.8-1gm protein/Kg ideal body weight per day. There is a fad theory that vegan/ vegetarian foods are poor sources of protein. As all vegan foods doesn't contain all essential amino acids, so one needs to take different foods rich in protein. Studies have shown that people on vegetarian/ vegan diet are at a lower risk of certain diseases like cance...

Sustainable living : It means making a conscious effort to reduce ones carbon foot print by leading a lifestyle that attempts to reduce use of the earth's natural resources. To me sustainable living is so important because, i want to give my future generation clean air, water and food. Sustainable living tips: Here are few tips Off lights when not required or when leaving a room. Reduce household energy use. As we all know coal is being burnt for electricity generation, hence by reducing household energy use, we can reduce our bit of carbon dioxide production.  During the day open the blinds of your windows and some times even open your patio doors and use maximum natural light as possible.  Replace your regular light bulb with LED bulbs as they consume lesser electricity and also last longer. Do not run water while brushing teeth and washing utensils.  While using washing machine always use cold water cycle, this helps in improving the clothes life and also r...

Pothos: Plant care &Growing guide

Image
POTHOS   Pothos commonly known as money plant .  They are easiest plants to grow. Pothos are hard to kill house plants with trailing habit and heart shaped leaves. They are amazing air purifiers. There are many variants available like golden pothos, marble queen pothos, neon pothos etc. Many people believe that this plant brings good luck and prosperity. As they are excellent air purifiers, they help clean the air by absorbing formaldehyde, benzene and carbon monoxide, which are commonly present in newly painted homes and they also helps in eliminating odors. They grow well in bright indirect light, hence they are great addition to bedrooms and offices. Pothos doesn't actually have to be planted in soil, they do very well in water.   If you are growing pothos in water try changing water regularly i.e once in 4 weeks, add regular tap water. It is to be noted that plants grow faster in soil than in water.  PROPAGATION: This is also one of the eas...

Trash to treasure

Image
FROM TRASH TO TREASURE We need not often use pricey or brand new things to elevate the space. We can also use the items which we consider them as trash. Instead of ending up the things in the landfill, lets give these things a second life i.e reuse before recycle.   Here is one such project where i am using  Plastic water bottles: Usually these single use plastic bottles don't decompose. Instead of trashing them, i thought why not reuse  them and so i turned it into a planter. I took a pothos cutting, put it into the bottle and added water.  Glass jars: Picked them from curbside, washed and dried them.  Stones   Assemble Take clean and dried glass jar, slowly add stones as they add some height because in my case the bottles i am using are little smaller than the jar. You can also add fairy lights instead of stones. Now place your bottle over those stones or lights.
